We are all about teamwork at TallMan.Promo, so we were delighted to partner with the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) to help promote teams in the league’s inaugural season in 2019.

With six teams across Canada, the CEBL aims to promote the second fastest growing sport in the World, while offering a chance for Canadian talent to pursue a pro career.

Before the opening tip-off of the first game, TallMan.Promo worked with team representatives in Hamilton and Guelph. We have provided cheering sticks and custom designed flags.

Our team was thrilled to play a role in ensuring that fans get the full, pro basketball experience while cheering on their teams.

We wish the CEBL and its teams the best of success as they continue to grow their league, their brand and their fanbase.

Candice and Alison Events Group is celebrating a milestone 10 years and TallMan.Promo was happy to collaborate with the award-winning designers to create an epic event at Malaparte in the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District!  We created giant 16ft high 3D custom inflatables of the namesakes Candice Chan and Alison Slight. The inflatables were perfect for photo opportunities and contributed to the larger-than-life event itself.

Shattered Glass
Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate Candice and Alison where they launched their first signature product - “Shattered Glass”.   It is a dry brut-style sparkling wine perfect for an occasion. Destined to create a statement, the eye-catching bottle is dressed with an ombre fringe that swings effortlessly as the wine is poured. The provocative name Shattered Glass is inspired by the precise moment the first glass drops and shatters behind the doors of an exclusive event.

Using hundreds of custom printed mylar balloons and vinyl floor and wall decals throughout the event, they kept the party branded and on-point.

A big thanks to Candice and Alison for this great impactful project and the wonderful opportunity to work for you. Congratulations!

The Toronto Pride Parade is a massive event bringing people from all across the province to celebrate pride. This year Tallman.Promo was happy to collaborate with Salesforce marketing cloud to create 3D inflatable costumes for their pride float. Salesforce was looking to add more impact and excitement to their float. These custom inflatable costumes were worn by team members at Salesforce and placed on the float to dance around and wave at the crowd.

Starting Point
For this project we took an existing set of 2D characters that were considered mascots for various salesforce campaigns and initiatives and turned them not only into 3D mockups but real life mascots. These can be frequently seen at professional sports matches and big events. Here are some of the examples working from 2D mockup to 3D design. Below you'll see the source files supplied by Salesforce in Vector File format.

From 2D to 3D

Our 3D designers use these to create the 3D files that will be used to create the inflatable costumes. We also use these for the approval stage in the project. The results will look like this:

Making the Inflatable Costume

Once the 3D mockups are complete we can begin the production phase and actually begin to create the costume piece. For Salesforce marketing cloud we were creating 4 individual units all with different artwork and specific pantone colours. Taking the 3D model we will print individual pieces with the colour directly on the fabric and then sew these pieces together to create the end result. The inflatable were delivered to the Salesforce office in Toronto and tested on the spot.

These 3D costumes work much like the traditional continuous air inflatables however they run on battery power and allow an individual to stand inside the unit moving around and engaging with an audience.

Inflatable Costume Instructions

To work your inflatable costume you should follow these steps;

1. Locate the zipper at the back or bottom of your inflatable unit.
2. Locate the backpack like structure inside the unit.
3. Place the battery packs in the given spots on the backpack unit.
4. Step inside the unit, putting your legs in the leg spots or bottom of the unit.
5. Put on the back pack, clip on all and adjust al straps to fit accordingly.
6. Turn the unit on by connecting the wires to the battery.
7. Zip up the zipper which you came in through (this may require assistance.)
8. Let the inflatable costume inflate, and enjoy.

Below are the end results, 4 custom made inflatable costumes produced by Tallman.promo and used in the Toronto Pride Parade. For your next event when  you are looking to create a unique piece and have an impact on a crowd consider a custom costume from Tallman.promo.

Thanks to Salesforce for the order and the sheer pleasure to work for you. For more information on our inflatable advertising options, feel free to check our site or contact one of our representatives.

What is the fabric of your business?
Displaying your product in the correct fabric is imperative for a successful impression. Fabric flags offer many options. There are dozens of fabrics to choose from - ranging from Knitted, Oxford, Nylon to Polyester. When it comes to making that final decisions there are a few variables you need to consider – How long it will last? How much it will cost?

What units of measure do we use for fabrics?
Denier (abbreviated D), a unit of measure for the linear mass density of fibers, is the mass in grams per 9000 meters of the fiber.[4] The denier is based on a natural reference: a single strand of silk is approximately one denier; a 9000-meter strand of silk weighs about one gram. The term denier comes from the French denier, a coin of small value (worth 1⁄12 sou). Generally the higher the Denier, the better the fabric.

GSM (abbreviated g) is a metric measurement meaning grams per square metre- it is how much 1 square metre of fabric weighs and the higher the GSM number the denser the fabric will be. Ounce per square yard (oz/sq2) is the imperial measurement which is also commonly used. A lightweight fabric is typically between 30- 150 GSM, medium weight 150-350 GSM and heavyweight 350+ GSM, although this can vary depending on the type of fabric.

Advertising Flags

Let’s go through some options.

Economy Fabrics (indoor) - 68D or 100D Polyester
Consider you need a flag to use once or twice and you’d like to keep the cost down. A good choice would be 100D Polyester. It’s a good quality and economical fabric for indoor and outdoor use. If you put it indoors, you should get about 6-12 months of use. 100D Polyester is thin and weighs about 90g so your logo would be seen clearly from the back of the flag. Now, if you have a really tight budget and simple logo, you could use a 68D Polyester.

Performance Fabrics  (outdoor)- 110g/130g Knitted Polyester or 300D Polyester
In terms of outdoor flags (high-cost performance), we recommend a great quality 110g Knitted Polyester. This Knitted Polyester features excellent air permeability. It is durable and long-lasting. We do have 130g Knitted Polyester if you need a heavier fabric with shiny and matte options. As well, there is another similar fabric – 300D Polyester with a weight of 160G – that is good choice for outdoor flags or banners.

Performance Fabrics  (long term outdoor)- 180g Spun Polyester
For a flag to be used for a long time outside, we suggest Spun Polyester with a weight of 180g. Its mesh fabric allows for great air permeability – perfect for long-term outdoor use. This material uses a fabric made from a polyester thread spun together from 2 or more single lines of thread.

Woven vs Knitted Fabric
One way to find out if it’s knit or woven is to test how it stretches. Because knit fabric is made from one continuous thread (much like the one continuous yarn in handknitting), it stretches all over. Woven fabrics, on the other hand, will only stretch diagonally or as a sewer might say, on the bias. To test, grab the fabric in question and pull it gently from side to side, top to bottom, diagonally. Does it stretch easily in all directions? If so, it’s probably a knit fabric. If you can only get a bit of stretch diagonally, it’s probably a woven fabric.

To show you how the different fabrics are made, please see the image here:

Woven vs Knit FabricThere are many fabrics flags to display and attract people to your business or event. Whatever your need, we will make a customized solution for you!

It's a Thanksgiving Day tradition, not only for New York but for a TV-watching nation as well: the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 2018, it will start at 9 a.m. ET, Thursday, November 22, and Macy's says there's two and half miles of public viewing along the route.

Here are six fun historical facts about the parade according to CNN:

1. It was originally a Christmas parade
The original store was about 20 blocks south on Sixth Avenue near 14th Street. Macy's has been at its current flagship location, at Broadway and 34th Street, since 1902. Continuing expansion made the location what Macy's called the "world's largest store," an entire city block with more than 1 million square feet of retail space.
In celebration, employees organized a Christmas parade in 1924 featuring "floats, bands, animals from the zoo and 10,000 onlookers," according to a Macy's history page. It also started way up at 145th Street. The parade concluded with Santa Claus and the unveiling of the store's Christmas windows. Three years later, the Christmas Parade was renamed the Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Macy's didn't invent the practice. Philadelphia has the oldest Thanksgiving Day parade: Its Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade, now the 6ABC - Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade, debuted in 1920.

2. The balloons have been around almost since the beginning
According to Mental Floss, the balloon attractions debuted in 1927, inspired by a balloon float. Even then, they were massive -- one was a 60-foot dinosaur -- and, in those days, they had more to deal with than just high winds and crazy weather: Until 1938, an elevated train ran down Sixth Avenue.

Well-known characters have been part of the parade since that 1927 outing. Felix the Cat was there from the beginning, and Mickey Mouse joined in 1934, the same year that featured a balloon based on popular entertainer Eddie Cantor. "Peanuts" characters, especially Snoopy -- who made his first appearance in 1968 -- are regular visitors.
One tradition didn't last long. The balloons were originally allowed to float away, and those who found them got a gift certificate from Macy's.

3. The parade was first broadcast on the radio
You had to use your imagination when the first broadcasts of the parade took place in 1932; they were on the radio. The parade was first televised in 1946 in New York and then nationally on NBC the next year.

4. Fans can watch the balloons get inflated
It's hard to keep things hidden on an island as cramped as Manhattan, and the Macy's balloons are no exception. They're inflated at a staging area at 77th Street and Central Park West, near the American Museum of Natural History. For many families, watching the balloons get ready is just as much a tradition as the parade itself.

The balloons are constructed at Macy's Parade Studio in Moonachie, New Jersey.  Macy’s balloon designers—dubbed “balloonatics”—begin up to a year before the parade with pencil sketches of each character, analyzing not just aesthetics but also aerodynamics and engineering. The sketches are followed by scaled-down clay models that are used to create casts of the balloons. Two miniature replicas are created: One that’s marked with technical details, and one that’s painted in the balloon’s colors. The models are immersed in water to figure out how much helium they’ll need to float.

Finally, the schematics are scanned by computer, and the fabric pieces are cut and heat-sealed to create the various air chambers of the balloon. Once the balloon is created, it's painted while inflated (otherwise, the paint will crack), then undergoes leak testing and indoor and outdoor flight tests. No wonder it costs at least $190,000 for a first-time balloon (after a first appearance, it costs $90,000 a year after that). The balloons are completed by Halloween and stored along a wall in the design studio's balloon warehouse.

5. The route has changed over time
For years, the parade's Midtown route went right down Broadway, Manhattan's spine. But in 2009, the route was moved to Seventh Avenue because of new pedestrian plazas along Broadway. It was changed to Sixth Avenue in 2011. Given the parade's draw as a tourist attraction, this did not go over well with some folks.

The balloons are directed by balloon pilots. They’re the people walking backwards in front of the balloon, directing a crew of volunteers holding guide ropes (called “bones”) and two Toro utility vehicles. Macy’s offers training three times a year for pilots. “We offer the pilots and captains the chance to go around the field a couple times with the balloon a couple of times and practice the instruction and guidance,” Kelly Kramer, a longtime Macy’s employee and balloon pilot, told Vanity Fair in 2014. “We also have classroom training.” It’s also important for balloon pilots to train physically; if not, “The next morning you wake up and you almost cannot get out of bed because your calves seize up,” Kramer said. “I walked backwards in my neighborhood at night.”

6. It hasn't always gone well
It looks so nice on television, doesn't it? But late November in New York can be dicey. In 1957, a wet day got wetter for people near a Popeye balloon: The character's hat filled with water and drenched parade watchers. The same thing happened in 1962 with a Donald Duck hat.  Superman once lost his arm to tree branches.

But the worst was probably 1997, a blustery day in the Big Apple. During that parade, winds reached more than 40 miles per hour, and the balloons were difficult to control. One balloon struck a lamppost and injured four people; one woman was in a coma for a month. The Pink Panther threatened a woman holding its ropes. "The balloon was caught on top of me and my daughter," she told The New York Times. "We thought it was going to smother us."

What are Helium or Floating Inflatables?
TallMan.Promo has proudly produced our custom inflatables for a variety of purposes for many satisfied clients. Our balloons are used to catch the eye, to relay a message, and to get your business, organization, product or special event the attention it deserves! We can match your ideas with our expertise to find the right inflatable for you.

Floating inflatables are very light airtight inflatables.  They will float in the air once they are filled up with helium. In order to float they are often made from a very light PVC material. Complex designs require a lot of material that needs to be off set by the volume of helium. There the more complex the design, the larger the inflatable model needs to be in order to float. We do not recommend the use of floating inflatable balloons for long term usage as they cannot be used in weather conditions with a lot of rain or wind.

They are very impactful, but are only for short term, managed use. Due to the light material, it is easy to puncture them.  In combination with the fact that in very windy weather you might not be able to use them at all, they are not a popular choice.

Types of Parade Inflatables
The Macy's parade is unique in the world. We have clients asking about similar parade inflatables, but often the  cost and availability of helium and risky nature of the balloons will steer them towards a cold air inflatable that placed placed on a wagon or back of a truck.

TallMan.Promo  has produced countless custom inflatables over the years. For the most part inflatable installation is relatively simple – a one-man job. This enormous replica jellyfish that we produced for The Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa - complete with LED lighting – provided a bit of a challenge.

Normally, inflatables are equipped with D-rings sewn into the reinforced fabric so they can easily be secured to the ground with straps and/or stakes. A blower is used to inflate it. In this case, the massive jellyfish inflatable had to be hoisted up and hauled across the ceiling. The installer – dangling by a safety harness - used huge ropes to suspend it in the colossal glass enclosure called the Queen’s Lantern. As well, the inflatable has LED lights INSIDE it so those had to be connected and illuminated properly. A large task but well worth the time and expertise of the installer. It looks amazing!

This is a perfect example of how we can create a custom animal replica inflatable. We made it to resemble a species of jellyfish called Pelagia noctiluca , or a mauve stinger. The LED lights illuminating it help make it look spectacular at night!

TallMan.Promo has products ranging from small point-of-sale inflatables to inflatable tents to giant rooftop inflatables more the 100ft. tall. We have extensive experience working with clients from design phase to completion to find the exact size and shape of finished products to bring your idea to life. We have produced hot air balloon style inflatables, animals, musical-themed inflatables, archways, custom-made tents – nearly every size and shape is possible or we can suggest options.

TallMan.Promo had the pleasure of producing an awe-inspiring snow wolf for the Alberta Ballet, as part of Nuit Blanche 2018 Edmonton. Nuit Blanche Edmonton organizers called the event a ‘labour of love and commitment’. The wolf was created in collaboration with artist Cameron Farn. His artistic vision is ‘fueled by his fascination for discovery and limitless possibilities of imaginative play.’

‘Alberta Ballet’s Snow Wolves illuminate our evening passage towards the dawn by providing a space of respite and calm,’ said the artist. ‘Their heavenly (divine?) presence reached out with gentle rays of light and welcomes the weary to rest.’

Nuit Blanche Edmonton
The event was about building a better city, situating contemporary art practices by visionary designers, artists, architects and creatives and connecting the works with urban spaces while mixing in the passion and enthusiasm of Edmontonians.

Cameron is the creative director and lead designer for a specialty fabricator. The Calgary native’s role as a consulting artist and technical designer has afforded him the opportunity and experience to develop a unique form language.

The snow wolf was a popular part of the Nuit Blanche in the prairie province and the second artistic inflatable that TallMan.Promo  produced during the Fall. See our previous post on the work we did for Toronto-based artist birdO for a 40-foot inflatable based on Kirtland’s Warbler, a small songbird that rose above a garden podium at 150 York/181 University Ave., during Toronto’s Nuit Blanche.

What are Cold Air Inflatables?
Cold-Air (or Continuous Air) inflatables are made from breathable fabrics and require a constant supply of air provided by an air blower. Tallman.Promo provides both battery and outlet powered air blowers. When switched on this air-blower will fill the inflatable with air and keep it inflated. When switched off it will stop blowing air which will automatically deflate the billboard. These units will keep going even with small leaks. Most of the large inflatables we sell are cold-air inflatables.
