A barrel full of monkeys is popping up in Old Market Square… Don’t miss out or you’ll get caught red-handed!
Run, walk, ride, or roll through the Exchange where inflatables created by local artist Paul Robles will light up Old Market Square. The curved forms will lead you through a snake-like path and make you wonder, why are monkeys building pyramids in the Exchange? Why are their hands red? Are they ghosts of a pre-pandemic social scene?
See Hear Speak was conceived of during the pandemic and is intended to interrupt the quiet of a once thriving gathering place. It is an oddity calling for attention, conjuring a magnetic contradiction that highlights and denies the human experience of contact, folly, and closeness. The playful shapes are layered with monkeys and meaning to suggest team bonding exercises, sporty cheer(leaders), religious divination, and even fraternity hazing. Echoing society’s current unease, the title invokes the proverb of the Three Wise Monkeys and how the threat of isolation and despair can lead to compulsive diversion.
The temporary inflatables, commissioned through Winnipeg’s Public Art Program with support from the Winnipeg Foundation and presented by Winnipeg Arts Council, were installed September 25 – October 3 2021 in Old Market Square.
Tallman.Promo is proud to have partnered with the artist on this project. Thanks to the Winnipeg Arts Council for supporting the collaboration with the artist and to True North Sports and Entertainment for the loan of production supplies.
From the initial design to the 3D models, from the LED lighting to the blower locations, this project was a delight.

TallMan.Promo had the pleasure of producing an awe-inspiring snow wolf for the Alberta Ballet, as part of Nuit Blanche 2018 Edmonton. Nuit Blanche Edmonton organizers called the event a ‘labour of love and commitment’. The wolf was created in collaboration with artist Cameron Farn. His artistic vision is ‘fueled by his fascination for discovery and limitless possibilities of imaginative play.’
‘Alberta Ballet’s Snow Wolves illuminate our evening passage towards the dawn by providing a space of respite and calm,’ said the artist. ‘Their heavenly (divine?) presence reached out with gentle rays of light and welcomes the weary to rest.’
Nuit Blanche Edmonton
The event was about building a better city, situating contemporary art practices by visionary designers, artists, architects and creatives and connecting the works with urban spaces while mixing in the passion and enthusiasm of Edmontonians.
Cameron is the creative director and lead designer for a specialty fabricator. The Calgary native’s role as a consulting artist and technical designer has afforded him the opportunity and experience to develop a unique form language.
The snow wolf was a popular part of the Nuit Blanche in the prairie province and the second artistic inflatable that TallMan.Promo produced during the Fall. See our previous post on the work we did for Toronto-based artist birdO for a 40-foot inflatable based on Kirtland’s Warbler, a small songbird that rose above a garden podium at 150 York/181 University Ave., during Toronto’s Nuit Blanche.
What are Cold Air Inflatables?
Cold-Air (or Continuous Air) inflatables are made from breathable fabrics and require a constant supply of air provided by an air blower. Tallman.Promo provides both battery and outlet powered air blowers. When switched on this air-blower will fill the inflatable with air and keep it inflated. When switched off it will stop blowing air which will automatically deflate the billboard. These units will keep going even with small leaks. Most of the large inflatables we sell are cold-air inflatables.

The artist known as birdO took his street-art aesthetic and transformed it into his first monumental sculpture for the garden podium, an urban oasis above 150 York Street/181 University Avenue. His vibrant hybrid of animal forms and abstraction rose above the trees and brought the secluded space alive with a playful sculpture.
For this piece, the artist was inspired by the Kirtland’s Warbler, a small songbird that nearly became extinct just 50 years ago and is now on it’s way to recovery. Requiring large areas of dense young jack pine that was historically created by wildfire, today this habitat is primarily created through the harvest of mature jack pine, and planting of seedlings. For Nuit Blanche in Toronto birdO has transformed the image of this tiny creature into an epic sculpture, rising out of an abstract base. The 40ft high inflatable loomed large over the downtown core.
